What’s a store without a wide, beautifully arranged, and neatly organized window? A couple of decades ago it would have been a store that hardly anyone ever visits. Nowadays, such a store can’t even exist. The ruthless business environment wouldn’t let it live to see another day. The same stands for a business without a website, or with an unprofessional one. Especially if that business has to do with art, as photography does.
Let’s dive into chronology some more. A decade or two ago, building a proper website was tough and required quite a bit of coding and expertise. Today, it requires a small investment and little to no technological knowledge. And that’s all thanks to WordPress, the leading content management system that powers about 75 million active websites. That means nearly 30% of all the Internet lives and thrives on this platform.
And WordPress not only allows you to manage your content in an efficient way, but also provides it with a proper outfit. Your website’s appearance depends on the theme you choose. As a photographer, you will want your site to work and act as both a portfolio and a resume. What better way to showcase your skills, accomplishments and experience?
Finding an adequate theme isn’t easy, so I decided to sift through hundreds of themes to find a handful that could work best for you. Let’s take a look at some of the best WordPress themes for photographers.
Whether you’re a freelancing photographer or have an agency, Ztudio X will meet your needs. Minimalism is definitely a thing now, and this theme proves it both in back and front ends. Use the live customizer to instantly view the effect of the changes you made. Your visitors will enjoy the lack of visual noise and the nice and sleek way in which your photos are displayed. GoodLayers Drag & Drop Page Builder was made with image-based websites in mind and is fully SEO compatible. There’s no need to purchase a slider separately, since the popular and modern Revolution Slider is already integrated into the theme. 14 blog layouts, 9 portfolio layouts, and 6 gallery layouts will be more than enough for your website’s present and future looks.
Although not tailored specifically to photographers, this theme offers a great opportunity to showcase your work in a way that really does it justice. You can choose from 20 beautiful, pre-made layouts and rich theme options. The intuitive WPBakery Page Builder functions as drag-and-drop. That means you can build your pages within minutes. What makes it especially nice for photographers is the Dribbble integration. If you don’t need it, you still have the option to create your own type of portfolio or choose from over 30 portfolio items. To this date, Kalium has over 26 thousand customers. But don’t worry, it doesn’t mean your site will look generic. It is so customizable that you can build a unique looking website. One that will be a masterpiece on its own.
Just when you think things couldn’t possibly get any easier, you stumble upon something like this. Like its subtitle says, this theme is more than just a theme. As a website builder that features 70 different themes, it’s more like a collection of themes where everything works live. And that makes it a great value for the money. Its live inline text editor resembles Microsoft Word and Google Docs. Thanks to it, you can alter every single element in the front end, in real time, while watching things evolve. There’s no need to enter the admin panel to tweak things from there and hit “Preview” all the time.
Its main theme has 100% Google score, which means it loads incredibly fast. Integrations include MailChimp for email marketing, Contact Form 7 for your visitors to easily get in touch, Ninja Popup for popup boxes, as well as WooCommerce for easy selling of your work. Better yet, any additional options that might come up in future updates will be at your disposal free of charge.
Looks are not everything – but in websites, they are still one of the most important aspects. And creators of this Photography WordPress theme know it. Whether you choose the text or image-video slider, your images will shine and glitter. The first option is great for a photography portfolio, whereas the second works well with videos. A bunch of shortcodes will work well with the drag-and-drop page builder to create a neat and refined appearance. The theme features a built-in calendar allowing you to keep your visitors up to date with your upcoming events. All the elements and possibilities are controlled by Unyson Framework that lets you customize everything.
The creators claim that this theme is the fastest photography theme on the market. If you are doing video too, there’s a wonderful video post template. And you don’t need any coding knowledge to take advantage of it. Just post the URL and the theme will pull it out and arrange it beautifully over the screen. If you would like to feature articles as well, there’s a reading mode that will place the text in the center while fading away the images. Plus, if you are a travel photographer, you can include a World Map page, with location pins that lead to your photos from that place. There is even an option to create password protected galleries and pages, so your clients can access, approve and reject them easily.
A professional photographer’s website doesn’t need a gazillion of elements on their homepage. All you need is to capture the visitors’ attention immediately. And, of course, make them want to click through and admire your beautiful photos. This theme offers a variety of options to showcase the images without diverting the visitors’ attention to anything else. It’s simple, uncluttered, and relies on strong visual appeal that should be your trademark. Choose from contrast and light predefined skins. Or create your own with colors that do your work most justice. The visitors will be able to see your images in slideshows, fullscreen or organized galleries.
In this era of digital noise, it’s tougher than ever to keep the visitors on your website. They might find it, like it, but still bounce off because they don’t like it enough. What better way to keep them there than to display a fullscreen slider of your photos in full resolution? It can prove more effective than trying to hook them in with a brilliant copy. While the copy might take 3/4 of a second to understand, clicking the X button takes even less. So, your photography website really has to showcase your photography, and nothing else. The creators of TwoFold theme realize it. That’s why all the pre-built layouts are focused on images, with amazing animations and photo hover effects.
Salewise, the theme is also very convenient. The lightbox is linked with WooCommerce, so you only need to add a “Buy This Photo” button and that’s it. Video producers will also rejoice, since they can easily transform a photo gallery into a video gallery by adding their video URLs.
This multi-purpose theme is a great solution for portfolio websites, creative agencies, restaurants, corporate, blogs, etc. Its versatility, however, doesn’t mean there is anything to wish for within your niche. There are over 200 pre-built layouts and 150 pre-built elements. So, getting this theme means having a really wide choice and unlimited creative freedom. It’s so customizable that you can alter or change virtually any element by clicking on it and updating it. A bunch of integrated plugins will save you lots of time. Those include MailChimp, Contact Form 7, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, Slider Revolution, W3 Total Cache, and All in One SEO Pack.
You must have heard of the saying “Less is more.” It has been around for centuries, and with a good reason: because obtrusion is creativity’s worst enemy. This theme’s designers were very well aware of the fact. And that’s why they supplied us with a clean and sleek way to make our work shine. Unlike with TwoFold, your visitors can toggle the fullscreen and turn it into a background slideshow, so they can focus on something else. It’s really about having a choice. And this theme offers a lot options to choose from. Eight fullscreen WordPress photography themes and styles allow you to showcase your photo or video content, in slideshows or single image covers, or even photowalls. The headers are discreet and transparent, except for the logo header, which is solid.
Scent is a theme designed with photography agencies in mind. The first thing your visitors will see is a fullscreen animated slider showing some of your best photos. When they click the action button, a gallery will open so they can view and choose from your models (if any) or see your portfolio. The element that’s worth the most is Visual Composer. It’s a front-end page builder that lets you modify and manipulate all the elements while observing the changes in real time. Blog post types include image, gallery, as well as video and audio. The latter can be either self-hosted or embedded from Youtube or Vimeo.
The copy says “Wedding Photographer.” But it’s just one of the niches this theme is good for. Ten pre-built layouts are far from everything it offers. You can adjust all of them to accommodate your horizontal or vertical images. Other features include promo boxes and promotional sliders with or without columns. Everything works to highlight your best content, with convenient sidebars to always lead your visitors back to what matters most. The sidebar drop-down menu on the homepage will not interfere or disrupt the viewer’s experience. Portfolio will showcase your best work in two to four columns. Food, travel and lifestyle bloggers will also enjoy this theme.
Photography is just one of the many niches that this theme is great for. Others include medical, fitness, wedding, corporate, portfolio, blog, beauty, education, and more. One of the most versatile and flexible themes from my list, it will polish and emphasize your content’s looks and present it in its best light. It features WPBakery Page Builder, which functions as a live drag-and-drop tool. Other plugins include Slider Revolution, WooCommerce, Contact Form 7. Whichever layout you choose, you can modify and customize all elements, so your brand can stand out.
Two words describe this theme most accurately – stylish simplicity. What makes it ideal for photographers is customization options for the homepage. Live fullscreen photowall with animated rotating words and action button, fast fades, slides, video background, thumbnail slider, or a single image – whichever homepage style you choose, you can rest assured it’s a good choice. You will appreciate the fact that all the images are zoomable, so make sure to upload full resolution. All the elements are tailored toward a perfectly seamless user experience, inspiring three main actions: view, share, buy.
Photographers’ websites can sometimes look too cold and corporate, without a personal touch. That’s what Florence is there to prevent. Its warm looking and simple style will let your visitors feel your personality. There aren’t many layout options to choose from – just classic, full width and full width narrow blog layouts. But both of them include a stylish Instagram feed in footer, making it easy for your visitors to follow you. All post types are available, which makes it a great theme for bloggers too. The theme features Gutenberg editor, which is perfect for media rich pages, and eliminates the need for more plugins.
Even though you’re not a writer, beautiful typography still plays a very important role on your website. That’s why Camera 7 is an awesome theme: its attention to detail is awe-inspiring. Gorgeous visual effects make it very dynamic and engaging. There are five different gallery showcase templates, so you can show your photowall with infinite scroll, photos along with the blog or pricing table, slider homepage, and more. The theme was created by TouchSize, a renowned theme and plugin designer company.
How about getting a theme with over 70+ ready-made gallery and portfolio layouts available? If you’re only just starting your photography website, you can get their demo site to start with. And it won’t take you more than a single click. There’s also tons of predefined stylings, so you don’t have to spend more time on devising your elements. This theme is definitely not for the faint-hearted, since it features bold and heavy typography that works best with contrast photos. Best of all, every single photo in a gallery has a direct purchase link, so the viewers don’t have to search for the buying option. It will also serve your current clients well, due to the photo proofing gallery. If you are afraid of dishonest players trying to steal your work, you can protect it with passwords, right click or image-dragging protection.
Galleries are your crucial ally in selling your work, and this theme has a great many options for them. Mosaic view, sortable thumb-view, tabbed grid-view, large thumbs list-view, sly, classic, fly gallery and more – plus, there are many visually appealing options for your blog section. The drag-and-drop template builder will let you customize your pages, so you can add, remove or rearrange just about anything. What I especially like about it is the “Like” feature, which enables easy faveing of your posts. Set the threshold of the “likes” so a post can become hot when it hits that number. Sidebars and widgets are unlimited, and Revolution Slider comes included so you don’t have to purchase it separately.
One-page design means everything is there on the homepage – a visitor only needs to scroll down or hit a header menu tab to get automatically directed to an element on the page. That’s what makes this a wonderful theme for storytelling. And even though you’re not a writer or author, you’re still telling a story with your photos. The Visual Composer page builder allows you to work in back-end or front-end, whichever you find more convenient. The Revolution Slider plugin is integrated and will enable you to create unique, SEO-friendly sliders. The full-width backgrounds will scroll with parallax effect, creating the illusion of depth (also known as the faux-3D effect).
With this theme, you will get 27+ templates that you can import with a single click. That’s a lot of value included in one batch. One of the most notable options is the Instagrammers Demo, so your site would look similar to Instagram. Why reinvent the wheel when it works fine such as it is? Five sliders look splendid as they are, but you can easily edit and adjust them to your overall concept. The Visual Composer Page Builder is intuitive and lets you modify any element. Everything works through drag-and-drop, so you need zero coding knowledge to use this theme. It includes over 30 shortcodes in a custom built plugin. Photographers will get the most from this theme, but it can also represent any portfolio website, whether you are an author, blogger, freelancer, or business agency.
Your current clients will be very content with this theme – as will casual visitors, prospects, and yourself. Tons of galleries and album layouts come in handy for photographers who have a great variety of work to display. Thanks to the portrait layouts, you won’t have to bother cropping images any longer. Just upload them and the theme will do the rest. Password protected galleries will allow your clients to review and choose the photos they like, with no one else having access to them. The Elementor Live Page Builder eliminates the need to ever click “Update” or “Preview” again – you can see your changes as you are making them. With over 160 predesigned pages, you’ll get a perfect value for your money.
How awesome it is to have a non-obtrusive, transparent menu and be able to toggle it to enjoy fullscreen photos? It’s possible with Kreativa, one of the most beautiful themes on my list. It offers over a dozen galleries – my personal favorite is Fotorama, which lets the photos speak for themselves. You can also choose from a plethora of portfolio styles, some of which are even protected so that no one can steal your work with a mere right click. The theme also offers gallery thumbnail hover effects, so that viewers can easily tilt, blur or zoom into the photo. For starters, choose from dark and light skins, as well as vertical or horizontal menu.
Your clients won’t have anything to complain about either, since they will be able to easily review your work and pick the images they like. Other features include, but are not limited to, page background slideshows and videos, page opacity control, password protection, WooCommerce and WPML support, and SEO optimization.
